The quiet details.

A door handle, a bedside switch and a place for a bag tell you whether a room has been thought through.

01

Begin with the first five minutes

Imagine arriving with a coat, a wet umbrella and a bag. Where can each item go without becoming clutter? The answer often lies in a useful ledge or shallow storage, rather than another decorative object.

02

Draw the reach

Controls look tidy on an elevation and can still be awkward from a bed or chair. Check actual positions and the people who will use them. A considered room puts usefulness within reach.

03

Rehearse the room

Before the final layout, walk through cooking, working, unpacking and cleaning. A simple tape outline on the floor often finds a problem that a polished image has hidden.
