Practice / 5 MIN READ / STUDIO NOTE 06

Before the first drawing.

The strongest brief begins with how a place should work, before deciding how it should look.

01

Describe a real day

List the small routines: coming home, cooking, a video call, laundry, a guest staying over. A clear description gives a designer something concrete to solve.

02

Name what stays

Existing furniture, favourite objects and limitations are valuable information. A project does not need to begin with an empty room. Knowing what stays makes the change more precise.

03

Agree the unknowns

Measurements, structure, permissions and budget all need confirmation. A useful early brief records those unknowns instead of hiding them behind a finished-looking image.
